Ankle Arthroscopy
A less invasive surgical procedure that helps diagnose and treat ankle issues
Ankle arthroscopy is a minimally invasive surgical procedure used to evaluate and treat a number of ankle conditions. The surgeon inserts a small camera via incisions less than 1cm long. This allows your podiatrist to examine and even treat the issue without creating the larger incisions common in traditional ankle surgery.
Because it involves small incisions and surgical tools, arthroscopic surgery usually has a faster recovery time than traditional surgical methods. There is also reduced risk of complications following arthroscopy.
Who Needs Ankle Arthroscopy?
Patients with a variety of ankle conditions may benefit from ankle arthroscopy. Your podiatrist may recommend it after a severe ankle sprain. Arthroscopic surgery may also be ordered to remove a bone chip or debris from torn cartilage.
What Happens During Ankle Arthroscopy?
Arthroscopic surgery starts with prepping the patient. This includes starting an IV line and administering anesthesia. In addition, the foot, ankle, and leg are cleaned, sterilized, and anesthetized via numbing or application of a local block.
The surgical podiatrist makes tiny incisions around the ankle. He or she then inserts small tubes known as portals. These hold the surgeon’s instruments and camera. When treatment is complete, the surgeon removes the portals and instruments, then closes the incisions. Finally, your doctor bandages the area.
What Are the Risks of Ankle Arthroscopy?
All surgery carries some risk. Ankle arthroscopy risks include:
- Infection
- Bleeding
- Nerve damage
There are also risks inherent in the application of anesthesia, although it is generally very safe. These risks vary according to the type of anesthesia chosen. Talk to your provider about your options, including the risks of each one.
Preparing for Ankle Arthroscopy
Your surgeon should provide a complete list of instructions to prepare you for your surgery. However, in general, you will likely be asked to do the following:
- Stop taking medications and supplements that thin the blood, such as aspirin, ginger, vitamin E, and turmeric for at least a few days before your procedure
- Make arrangements for a friend or family member to remain at the facility during your procedure as well as drive you home
- Do not eat or drink anything the day of your procedure
Depending on your job, you may also need to schedule a couple of days off of work. Again, please refer to the list of instructions provided by your doctor.
What to Expect After Ankle Arthroscopy
If you underwent general anesthesia, you will be taken to a recovery room following your procedure. Before sending you home, your surgeon should supply a list of instructions for recovery. These may include:
- Instructions regarding the use of crutches or an immobilizer
- Caring for the area, such as changing bandages and keeping them dry
- Medications to manage pain or discomfort
- Elevating the ankle and applying cold packs
The length of recovery varies according to the extent of your surgery. Please follow your doctor’s instructions carefully to ensure the best outcome.
Potential Side Effects of Ankle Arthroscopy
Most side effects from arthroscopic surgery, such as pain and swelling, are fairly minor and clear up in a few days. However, if you observe any of the following, seek medical attention right away.
- Signs of infection: Includes fever, redness or streaks around the incisions, draining pus, and increased pain 2+ days after the procedure
- Compartment syndrome: These symptoms occur in the leg, not just around the incision site, and may include pain, swelling, numbness, tingling, coldness, and changes in skin color
These conditions are rare. If you notice any of these symptoms, call your doctor immediately. If you are unable to reach your surgeon, go to the emergency room.
